Health Benefits of Shirataki Noodles


Shirataki noodles, glucomannan, konnyaku or konjac, no matter what you call it, this food has irrefutable health benefits without side effects.  Shirataki noodles and glucomannan are an FDA GRAS food.  This doesn’t mean that it is made of grass, it means that this food is generally regarded as safe – much the same as salt and pepper.  Unlike salt, there are numerous benefits to incorporating shirataki noodles and glucomannan into your regular diet.

Known as an Asian super fiber, konnyaku, or shirataki noodles has been used in Japan for over 1,500 years, especially traditional dishes such as sukiyaki.  Shirataki noodles and konjac has been found to be more viscous than usual fibers, causing the noodles to retain up to 17 times its weight in water.

Shirataki noodles have the ability to do the following:

  • expand in the stomach and the small and large intestine, where it surrounds and absorbs fat,
  • accelerate elimination due to being made of non-soluble fiber
  • reduce cholesterol by pulling taking fat out of the body
  • blunt sugar absorption
  • facilitate weight loss in part by increasing feelings of satiety

The best part about all the health benefits that you can receive from eating shirataki noodles is that you can flavor it to your liking and incorporate it into you meals.  If you would prefer to not eat the noodles, you can always purchase the powdered form of the fiber called glucomannan in easy to swallow capsules or as loose powder that you can sprinkle on your food.
